Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine has used organ meats as targeted, organ-specific medicine for over 3,000 years. The core principle is elegantly simple: heart feeds heart. Liver feeds liver. Kidney supports kidney. What looks like ancient philosophy turns out to have a remarkably sound basis in nutritional biochemistry — because organ meats are among the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet, and they concentrate exactly the compounds the corresponding organ needs to function.

In the United States it's formally taught through the Chi Institute, which offers board certification in veterinary acupuncture and TCVM food therapy to licensed veterinarians.
TCVM food therapy assigns each food a thermal energy (warming, cooling, or neutral), an organ affinity, and a specific action in the body. Organ meats are considered potent tonics — concentrated sources of the same building blocks found in the corresponding tissue. This isn't metaphor. Organ meats are structurally and biochemically distinct from muscle meat. Feeding guideline: 5–10% of total diet. Beef, chicken, and duck heart are all excellent. Heart is classified as muscle meat in raw feeding frameworks — not organ — so it doesn't count against the organ cap. Can be fed raw, lightly cooked, or as freeze-dried treats.
Liver — Feeds the Liver

Liver is the original superfood. Calorie for calorie, it has no rival in the nutrient density rankings. Dogs on long-term processed kibble often run subclinically low in these cofactors — not deficient by standard blood panel thresholds, but low enough to impair optimal liver function. In TCVM, liver has a slightly warming to neutral nature and an affinity for the Liver and Blood. It is used to nourish Blood deficiency — dogs who are anemic, lethargic, have dull coats, or are recovering from illness or surgery.
Critical caveat on dosing: Liver is extremely high in vitamin A, which is fat-soluble and accumulates in the body over time. Vitamin A toxicity in dogs causes bone pain, progressive stiffness, and eventually irreversible skeletal deformities. Liver should represent no more than 5% of the total diet — approximately 1 oz per 20 lbs of body weight, fed 1–2 times per week maximum. Within that guideline, it's an exceptional food. Exceed it consistently over months, and hypervitaminosis A becomes a real concern.
Feeding guideline: No more than 5% of total diet, 1–2x per week. Chicken, beef, duck, and lamb liver are all appropriate. Lamb liver is milder and gentler for sensitive dogs new to organ meats.
Kidney — Feeds the Kidneys

Kidney is one of the highest whole-food sources of selenium — a trace mineral essential for glutathione peroxidase activity, which is one of the kidney's primary antioxidant defenses against oxidative tubular damage. Selenium deficiency accelerates renal dysfunction in multiple animal models, and most processed dog foods provide selenium in poorly bioavailable inorganic forms.

Lung — Feeds the Respiratory System and Skin

Lung tissue is rich in elastin — the elastic structural protein that allows lung tissue to expand and recoil with each breath. Elastin is also the primary structural protein in skin. Dogs fed lung regularly often develop noticeably improved skin elasticity and coat texture — a connection that integrative vets have observed clinically and that the TCVM lung-skin relationship anticipates.

Brain — Feeds the Nervous System
The Nutritional Case
Brain tissue is approximately 60% fat by dry weight — and a substantial portion of that fat is DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), the omega-3 fatty acid that is the primary structural component of neuronal cell membranes. The brain is literally built from DHA, and it is the most DHA-dense tissue in the body. Feeding brain provides DHA in its most bioavailable, phospholipid-bound form — the exact molecular form found in nervous system tissue.
Brain also provides phosphatidylserine — a phospholipid that supports neuronal membrane fluidity, memory consolidation, and synaptic signaling. TCVM Thermal Energetics: Matching the Food to the Dog
Beyond "like supports like," TCVM assigns each food a thermal nature — not temperature, but metabolic effect. For dogs in practice:
- Warming foods (venison, lamb, chicken, beef, ginger, oats) — indicated for cold-intolerant dogs, dogs with low energy, slow metabolism, pale gums, or chronic stiff joints in cold weather
- Cooling foods (duck, rabbit, fish, turkey, pork) — indicated for dogs with chronic inflammation, hot spots, allergies, panting, restlessness, or a tendency to seek cool surfaces
- Neutral foods (beef, pork, eggs, most vegetables) — appropriate for most dogs regardless of constitution
A dog with chronic inflammatory conditions — allergies, recurring hot spots, arthritis flares — typically does better on cooling proteins like duck, rabbit, or fish. A dog who is always cold, has low energy, or has difficulty warming up benefits from warming proteins. This framework is applied daily in integrative veterinary practices alongside conventional care and has clinical utility even if the mechanism looks different from Western physiology.
Practical Guidelines: The 10% Rule
Most raw feeding frameworks and holistic vets use the following structure for organ meats:
- Total secreting organs: 10% of the diet (liver, kidney, spleen, pancreas combined)
- Liver specifically: no more than 5% — vitamin A toxicity risk above this
- Heart: classified as muscle meat, not organ — can be 5–10% of the muscle meat portion without contributing to the organ cap
- Lung and trachea: counted as "other" — use freely within the 10% organ allocation
If you are not feeding a complete raw diet, adding organ meats as toppers meaningfully upgrades any meal. Even a tablespoon of raw chicken liver twice a week — over an otherwise kibble-based diet — provides nutrient density that kibble simply cannot replicate. When buying commercial food, look for specific organ names in the ingredient list. "Chicken by-products" or "meat by-products" are rendered, heat-processed mixes — the bioavailable enzymes, structural proteins, and heat-sensitive vitamins that make fresh organ meats valuable are destroyed in the rendering process. They are not equivalent to fresh organ meat.
