If there's one supplement that has more legitimate research behind it than almost anything else in dog nutrition, it's omega-3 fatty acids. Not because supplement companies say so — because veterinary clinical trials actually say so. The hard part is knowing which source to use, how much to give, and why most dogs on kibble are severely deficient without ever showing obvious symptoms.
What Are Omega-3 Fatty Acids?
The three most relevant for dogs are:
- EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) — the primary anti-inflammatory omega-3. Directly reduces inflammatory cytokines and supports joint, skin, and immune health
- DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) — critical for brain development, vision, and neurological function
- ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) — found in plant sources like flaxseed. Dogs convert ALA to EPA and DHA very inefficiently — less than 15% conversion rate. Plant-based omega-3s are not an adequate substitute for marine sources.
The ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 in the diet matters as much as the absolute amount. Most commercial kibble has a ratio of 10:1 to 25:1. The optimal ratio for dogs is thought to be closer to 5:1 or lower.
What the Clinical Evidence Actually Shows
Joint Health and Osteoarthritis
A randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association found dogs with osteoarthritis fed a diet supplemented with fish oil showed significant improvement in weight-bearing ability and overall mobility scores. [Study]
Skin and Coat Health
EPA and DHA are incorporated directly into skin cell membranes, reducing the inflammatory response that drives itching, flaking, and coat dullness. Dogs with atopic dermatitis showed measurable symptom reduction with fish oil supplementation. [Study]

Dogs with chronic kidney disease supplemented with fish oil had significantly slower progression of kidney dysfunction and longer survival times compared to dogs given vegetable oil. [Study]
Heart Disease
24 Boxer dogs with arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy were randomized to fish oil, flax oil, or sunflower oil. Fish oil significantly reduced ventricular arrhythmias. Flax oil was not effective. [Study]
Lipoma Management
Fish oil in dogs specifically lowers blood glucose, raises adiponectin (an anti-inflammatory fat hormone), and improves how the body handles stored fat — all mechanisms directly relevant to lipoma formation.
Best Sources: Whole Food vs. Capsules
1. Whole Food Fish — Best Option
Sardines, mackerel, and salmon eaten as whole food provide EPA and DHA in a naturally occurring phospholipid form that is more bioavailable than standard fish oil capsules. They also provide protein, taurine, vitamin D, selenium, and other cofactors.
- Canned sardines in water (no salt added) — easiest, cheapest, most accessible
- Wild-caught salmon (cooked) — excellent source, feed 1–2x per week
- Canned mackerel in water — high EPA/DHA, widely available
- Avoid tuna — high mercury content
Important: Always cook salmon before feeding — raw Pacific salmon can carry Neorickettsia helminthoeca, which causes salmon poisoning disease in dogs.
2. Fish Oil Supplements — Good with Caveats
Quality varies enormously. Key things to check:
- Oxidation — rancid fish oil increases oxidative stress. Smell it — should smell like the ocean, not strong rotten fish
- EPA/DHA content — check the actual milligrams of EPA and DHA, not just "fish oil" amount
- Form — triglyceride form is more bioavailable than ethyl ester form
- Third-party testing — for mercury, lead, and PCBs
3. Krill Oil — Premium Option
Krill oil provides omega-3s in phospholipid form (higher bioavailability), plus astaxanthin — a powerful antioxidant that protects the omega-3s from oxidation. More expensive but requires a lower dose.
How Much to Give
- General health maintenance: 20 mg combined EPA/DHA per kg of body weight per day
- Anti-inflammatory (skin, joints, lipomas): 50–55 mg combined EPA/DHA per kg per day
For a 75 lb (34 kg) dog: maintenance = ~680 mg EPA/DHA/day; anti-inflammatory = ~1,700–1,870 mg EPA/DHA/day.
Introduce gradually — start at 25% of target dose and increase over 2 weeks to avoid loose stools.
Signs Your Dog May Be Omega-3 Deficient
- Dull, dry, or coarse coat
- Flaky skin or dandruff
- Chronic itching or skin inflammation
- Stiff joints, difficulty rising
- Growing or new lipomas
- Excessive shedding beyond normal seasonal patterns
