Emergency numbers
ASPCA Animal Poison Control: (888) 426-4435 · Pet Poison Helpline: (855) 764-7661. Act fast, don't wait for symptoms; don't induce vomiting unless told to.
TOXIC — with actual thresholds/mechanisms
- Xylitol (sweetener; hidden in gum, some peanut butter) — insulin dump → hypoglycemia ~0.1 g/kg, liver failure ~0.5 g/kg. Most dangerous common toxin.
- Chocolate — theobromine + caffeine. Signs ~20 mg/kg, cardiac ~40–50, seizures ~60 mg/kg. Darker = worse; white ≈ none.
- Grapes/raisins — tartaric acid (current leading theory) → acute kidney failure. No safe dose (idiosyncratic). Raisins more concentrated.
- Onions (+ leeks/shallots/chives) — thiosulfates → Heinz-body hemolytic anemia ~5 g/kg; cumulative; cooked/powder worse. Delayed signs.
- Garlic — same allium mechanism, ~5x more potent than onion; toxic studies used ~5 g/kg. BUT holistic dose (~1/4 clove per 10 lb) is far below toxic — dose-dependent, safe in moderation for dogs, never cats. (Honest reconciliation with our [[Holistic Parasite Prevention and Natural Deworming]] garlic guidance.)
- Macadamia nuts — toxic ~2 g/kg; weakness/tremors/hyperthermia; usually recover 24–48h.
- Alcohol & raw yeast dough — ethanol; dough also rises → bloat. Emergency.
- Caffeine/coffee — stimulant like theobromine; grounds/beans concentrated.
Often OVERSTATED / nuance
- Avocado — persin toxic to birds, dogs fairly resistant; flesh in small amounts ok; real risks = pit (obstruction) + fat.
- Cooked bones / corn cobs / pits — physical hazards (splinter / obstruction), not poisons.
- Dairy — lactose upset varies; plain yogurt/kefir usually fine + probiotic.
- Fatty/salty foods — pancreatitis (fat), sodium issues (salt). Not "toxic" but real harm.
SAFE & healthy (the fun list)
Blueberries (antioxidants), carrots, plain pumpkin (fiber), eggs (protein), plain yogurt/kefir (probiotics), sardines (omega-3), apples (no seeds), green beans, sweet potato, watermelon (no seeds/rind), cucumber, xylitol-free peanut butter. Rule: ~10% of calories, one new thing at a time, plain (no salt/sugar/onion/garlic).
