Heat & Exercise Safety for Dogs

Came out of the [[Hershey]] "tired after sprints" analysis. Part of [[Nutrition]] / general care.
The core logic
Dogs cool by panting = evaporation. High humidity cripples that even at mild temps (~70°F + 70% humidity can be worse than a hot dry day). So heat fatigue = a cooling problem, not a fitness or fuel problem.
Heat vs. fuel (the differential — from Hershey's case)
- Fine at low/steady intensity for 1–2 hrs → fuel is fine (rules out low carbs).
- Fine SWIMMING but fades sprinting on land → cooling is the bottleneck (water sheds heat) = heat, not carbs.
- Only high-intensity sprints crash him fast on warm/humid days → classic heat-dissipation limit.
- Don't add carbs for this. Dogs burn fat efficiently; carbs aren't needed for energy. Small sweet-potato topper only for genuine sprint glycogen, and a lipoma-prone Lab doesn't need extra carbs anyway.
Heatstroke = emergency
Signs: frantic panting, thick drool, bright-red or dark/bluish gums, glassy eyes, wobbling, vomiting, collapse/seizures. Normal temp 101–102.5°F; >104 dangerous, >106 critical. Do: shade/AC, small cool water, pour COOL (not ice) water on belly/groin/armpits/paws + fan, then vet immediately even if he seems recovered (delayed organ damage). Don't use ice-cold water.
Higher-risk dogs
Brachycephalic (Bulldogs/Pugs/Boxers), dark/thick coats, overweight, seniors, puppies, heart/lung conditions, "run hot" (TCVM). Be extra conservative.
Safe hot-weather exercise
Early morning/evening; swap sprints for steady work or swimming (best hot-day exercise — low-impact
- built-in cooling); water + shade breaks; pavement test (too hot for your palm 5s = burns pads); let the dog set the pace (self-imposed breaks = smart, not lazy). Water hydrates but does NOT fix cooling in humidity.
