Joint Health Research (citation-backed pack)

Ingested into Pinecone as a 10-pair Q&A pack on 2026-07-02. Source file: qa-joints-research.json. Built directly from [[Canine Joint Health - Evidence-Based Natural Remedies]] (your research doc with PubMed/PMC citations). Complements the earlier general [[Condition Packs - Joints and Pancreatitis (evidence-graded)|joints pack]] (separate topic joints-research, so it adds rather than overwrites). Part of [[Nutrition]].

Evidence grades captured (with the actual studies)

  • Weight management — STRONG. Marshall 2010 (lameness ↓ after ~6% body-weight loss); Impellizeri 2000; Mlacnik 2006.
  • Omega-3 (EPA/DHA) — STRONG. Roush 2010 force-plate: weight-bearing improved 82% vs 38% controls; 127-dog multicenter RCT. Therapeutic dose >> "joint chew" amounts; marine not flax.
  • Green-lipped mussel — MODERATE–STRONG. Bui & Bierer 0.3% GLM RCT; Hielm-Björkman 2009; 2024 accelerometry pilot.
  • UC-II collagen — MODERATE. Stabile 2019: ~33% improvement, comparable to robenacoxib (NSAID).
  • Curcumin/collagen/green tea — EMERGING–MODERATE. Comblain 2017 RCT (42 dogs). Poor absorption unless bioavailable form; clotting caution.
  • CBD — EMERGING–MODERATE. Gamble 2018; Cornell 2 mg/kg BID 2020; can ↑ liver enzymes.
  • Glucosamine/chondroitin — MIXED/WEAK–MODERATE. McCarthy 2007 positive by day 70; but Kampa et al. 2023 (Frontiers Vet Sci, PMID 36816197) force-plate: did NOT beat placebo (while GLM/PCSO-524 matched carprofen). (Source doc [[Canine Joint Health - Evidence-Based Natural Remedies]] mislabels this as "Alves 2023" — correct author is Kampa; worth fixing in that note.)

Honest lens baked in

Caregiver placebo effect ~40–50% in dog OA → why blinded + force-plate objective data matter; distrust testimonials.

Evidence-led plan

Lean BCS 4–5/9 + low-impact exercise (foundation) → marine omega-3/GLM (core) → UC-II / curcumin blend / CBD (add-ons) → glucosamine optional → rehab + vet-guided meds for moderate-severe. 6–12 wk trials, track objective signs.

What I actually use

For joint health research (citation-backed)

Narrow on purpose — only what this page argues for. Kyle feeds these to Hershey.

Fish Oil (Omega-3)

The single highest-leverage addition to a kibble bowl — most dry food runs 12:1 to 30:1 omega-6:3 against a 5:1 target.

How to use it: Read the EPA and DHA lines and add them, not the headline mg. ~20mg EPA+DHA per lb for wellness; 30–45mg per lb in the arthritis trials.

Green Lipped Mussel

Whole-food joint support — omega-3s, glycosaminoglycans and ETA in one ingredient rather than three isolated powders.

How to use it: Freeze-dried whole mussel, not an extract, if you can get it.
