Zoonotic Parasites (dog → human)
9-pair pack ingested 2026-07-04 under [[PINECONE_PROTOCOL]]. Sourced to CDC/CAPC. The accurate, sensible-hygiene counter to the alarmist "never let your dog inside / don't kiss your dog" human-cleanse framing we rejected. Related [[Holistic Parasite Prevention and Natural Deworming]].
The real zoonotic risks
- 🟡 Roundworm (Toxocara canis) — biggest concern; causes visceral/ocular larva migrans. Eggs pass in stool but need days–weeks in soil to become infective → kids ingest matured eggs (pica). CDC: 1–3M larva-migrans cases/yr.
- 🟡 Hookworm (Ancylostoma) — larvae penetrate skin (bare feet on contaminated soil/sand) → cutaneous larva migrans (itchy tracks).
- 🟡 Flea tapeworm (Dipylidium) — rare, mostly kids swallowing an infected flea. Echinococcus = serious but regional.
- 🟡 Giardia — MYTH-CORRECTION: most canine strains are NOT readily transmitted to humans; pets aren't the source of most human Giardia.
Who's at risk / prevention
- Highest risk: young children (pica, hand-to-mouth, sandboxes), immunocompromised, pregnant. Healthy adults = low risk.
- 🟢 Prevention (handles nearly all of it): prompt stool pickup (before eggs mature), hand-washing, routine deworming/prevention + stool checks, deworm puppies early, shoes outside, cover sandboxes, don't let kids eat dirt.
- 🟡 You do NOT need to banish the dog / stop cuddling — transmission is via contaminated SOIL, not casual contact with a dewormed dog. Reasonable hygiene, not paranoia.
- Puppies = highest shedders (born with/acquire worms via placenta/milk) → early vet deworming schedule.
