TCVM Food Therapy — the energetic bowl

Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine works energetically rather than mechanistically. Instead of suppressing a symptom, it identifies the underlying imbalance and restores harmony so the body heals itself.

This is centuries-old traditional knowledge, not one practitioner's system. It sits alongside nutritional analysis rather than replacing it — the strongest choices are the ones both frameworks agree on.

The four pillars

Food therapy is the pillar an owner can actually run at home, which is why it's worth understanding.

Hot and cold — the first question

Every dog sits somewhere on a spectrum, and the goal is to feed against the imbalance.

A HOT dog — seeks cool surfaces, pants readily, red tongue, red eyes, always thirsty, restless at night, sometimes red itchy skin. → Feed cooling foods. Avoid warming ones.

A COLD dog — seeks blankets and sun, cold to the touch at the extremities, pale tongue, low energy, stiff in the mornings, softer stool. → Feed warming foods.

A NEUTRAL dog — no strong signs either way. Rotate freely.

Most dogs aren't at an extreme. Only be strict about avoiding warming proteins if a dog is showing active heat signs. The goal is that the overall diet leans the right way, not that every meal is perfect.

Chicken being warming matters more than people expect, because it's the protein most dogs eat most of.

Preparation changes the energy

The same ingredient shifts depending on what you do to it:

This is useful: you can feed the same protein and shift its effect by how you prepare it. A cold dog does better on stewed food; a hot dog does better on lightly cooked or raw.

The five tastes, and where they go

Each taste is traditionally associated with an organ system:

A diet dominated by one taste pulls one system out of balance — which is one framing for why variety matters.

The eye as a diagnostic map

Traditional practice maps regions of the eye onto organ systems. It's a pattern language for where to look, not a test:

Read this as a prompt, not a diagnosis. Mild pink in the whites of a hot dog on a hot day is thermoregulation — dogs dump heat by dilating peripheral blood vessels and the conjunctiva is one of the few vascular beds you can see. The map is telling you where to look; what you find still has to be interpreted.

Where it agrees with the numbers — and where it doesn't

The strongest picks are the ones both frameworks endorse. Fish is the clearest: cooling in TCVM and the best source of EPA and DHA. Rabbit is another — cooling, and outstanding on fatty-acid profile.

But they can disagree, and it's worth knowing which to trust when they do. A protein can be "cooling" in TCVM and considerably worse on omega-6 to omega-3 ratio and arachidonic acid. If a dog is inflamed and itchy, the fatty-acid numbers are doing more work than the thermal category.

Use TCVM to choose between nutritionally comparable options, not to override a measured difference.

Practical starting points

  1. Work out whether your dog runs hot or cold. Watch where they choose to lie down.
  2. Lean the rotation the other way. Not every meal — the overall trend.
  3. Use preparation as a second lever. Same food, different effect.
  4. Rotate proteins. Years on one protein is itself a risk factor for developing sensitivity to it.
  5. When both frameworks agree, that's your answer. Fish, for most dogs, most of the time.
