Sensitive Stomach / Chronic Diarrhea / IBD (11 pairs — qa-sensitive-stomach-gi.json)
- Strongest evidence = DIET. Most chronic enteropathy is food-responsive — resolves on a strict novel/hydrolyzed-protein elimination diet (6–8 wks), often without drugs.
- Probiotics: promising but modest — RCT showed faster acute-diarrhea resolution (~3.5 d vs 4.6 metronidazole vs 4.8 placebo) but not statistically significant; safe, useful adjunct. For IBD, adjunct to diet+prednisone (modulates microbiome).
- Fiber: high-fiber diet + probiotic resolved large-bowel diarrhea fast in a 30-dog study; pumpkin = at-home version.
- Bone broth + short fast for mild acute upset (not puppies/seniors/diabetics/vomiting/bloody).
- Slippery elm / L-glutamine: sound mechanism + traditional use, limited canine trial data — supportive only.
- Vet red flags: blood, weight loss, repeated vomiting, lethargy, >48h.

- Malassezia is normal skin flora that overgrows secondary to an underlying cause — usually ALLERGY. Recurrence = treat the root, not just the yeast.
- HONEST on the "sugar/carbs feed yeast" claim: popular but weakly supported in dogs; literature is mixed and some points to dietary fat, not sugar. Low-carb may help some but isn't the cure. (Important — don't overstate.)
- Best-proven treatment = topical: 2% miconazole + 2% chlorhexidine shampoo ~2×/week (strong evidence); oral azoles (ketoconazole/itraconazole) moderate evidence.
- Natural supports (diluted ACV rinse, coconut oil, probiotics, anti-inflammatory diet) = reasonable complements, less trial data — diet helps mainly by addressing the underlying allergy/inflammation.
- Ears: recurrent infection = allergy tell; clean safely (no deep Q-tips); vet if painful/swollen/head tilt/ruptured eardrum.
