Anxiety/Calming & Bloat/GDV (protocol packs)
Two Q&A packs ingested 2026-07-04 under [[PINECONE_PROTOCOL]] (confidence-tagged + sourced). Part of [[Nutrition]] / care.
Anxiety & Calming (10 pairs — qa-anxiety-calming.json)
- 🟢 Exercise + enrichment + routine = foundation (most reliable natural tool).
- 🟡 L-theanine — strongest published natural calming evidence; onset ~30–60 min; non-sedating.
- 🟡 Pheromones (Adaptil/DAP) — multiple studies; modest, safe layer.
- 🟡 Alpha-casozepine (Zylkene) — milk-protein; good for general/noise anxiety.
- 🟡 Probiotics (gut-brain) — B. longum BL999 (Purina Calming Care) clinical trial; needs 6–12 wks.
- 🟠 CBD — emerging for anxiety (stronger for pain); liver-enzyme + quality caveats.
- 🟡 Meds (Prozac/fluoxetine) — legit for severe (FDA Reconcile); root-cause-first but never withhold from a suffering dog.
- ⚪ Calming treats/melatonin — modest; judge by actual ingredients/doses.
- 🟢 When to get pro help — panic/self-harm/can't-be-left → vet + behaviorist; rule out pain/medical.
Bloat / GDV (9 pairs — qa-bloat-gdv.json)
- 🟢 GDV = acute life-threatening emergency (stomach twists → shock, can kill in hours). ER immediately, NOT a holistic/home situation.
- 🟢 Signs: unproductive retching (trying to vomit, nothing comes up) + distended hard belly + restlessness/drooling/pacing → emergency NOW.
- 🟢 Risk: large/giant deep-chested breeds (Great Dane highest), genetics/family history, age, fast eating, one big meal, exercise after eating.
- 🟡 MYTH-BUST: raised bowls do NOT prevent bloat — they INCREASE risk (Glickman 2000). Feed at floor level.
- 🟡 Feeding management (adjunctive): 2–3 small meals, slow-feeders, avoid exercise ~1h around meals.
- 🟢 Gastropexy = most effective prevention: recurrence ~80% without vs <5% with; consider prophylactic in high-risk breeds (often at spay/neuter). Prevents twist, not gas.
- ⚪ Honest: bloat is largely anatomical/genetic — no diet/supplement reliably prevents it. Know signs + consider gastropexy > rely on diet.
- 🟡 MYTH-BUST (added 2026-07-04): "kibble swells in the stomach and causes bloat" is FALSE. GDV = gas + twisting, not food expansion. Moistening kibble can BACKFIRE — dry food w/ citric acid moistened before feeding = +320% risk (Glickman); fat in first 4 ingredients = +170%; grain does NOT raise risk (myth). Canned food ≈ 28% LOWER risk (partly breed-confounded). Rehydrated freeze-dried is fine — expansion happens in the bowl, not the stomach; the +320% finding is about citric-acid DRY kibble, not freeze-dried raw. Real levers: meal size, slow eating, floor bowls, gastropexy.
