Does Green-Lipped Mussel Work for Dog Joints?

The evidence is real but mixed. A randomized, double-blinded trial (Hielm-Björkman et al., 2009) in 45 dogs with osteoarthritis found the green-lipped mussel group improved more than placebo on pain and mobility — but a 2022 crossover trial found improvement over baseline without beating placebo. So several trials show benefit, not all beat placebo. Confidence: MEDIUM — it's one of the better-evidenced joint options, worth trying alongside omega-3 and weight management.

Quick answers

The essentials. For anything specific to your dog, just ask the assistant above.

How long does green-lipped mussel take to help a dog's joints?

It's slow-acting, like most joint nutraceuticals — give it a solid 8 or more weeks of consistent daily use before judging whether it's helping. Pair it with the higher-confidence levers (weight management and omega-3s) rather than relying on it alone.

Does the form of green-lipped mussel matter?

It can. The active anti-inflammatory components are marine lipids, so cold-processed or oil-extract forms that preserve those lipids are generally preferred over heat-treated powders that may degrade them. Look for products that specify a stabilized or lipid-rich extract.

Is green-lipped mussel safe for dogs?

It's generally very well tolerated, which is part of its appeal as a low-risk add-on. The main caution is shellfish allergy. As always, dose to your dog's weight and introduce it on its own so you can tell whether it's helping.
