Isoxazolines (Bravecto, NexGard, Simparica) are systemic neurotoxic pesticides designed to stay in a dog's bloodstream for 1–12 months. They block nerve-signal channels to paralyze and kill insects. They're meant to affect only insects, but research shows they can cross the blood-brain barrier in mammals, creating a risk of neurological toxicity in some dogs. Companies cite '0.01%' rates, but U.S. reporting is voluntary. FDA data from 2013–2017 documented 1,728 seizures and 801 deaths. The Project Jake survey (2,751 respondents, 2020) found that of 1,594 treated dogs, 66.6% experienced an adverse event including tremors, ataxia, or seizures. Europe's mandatory reporting showed 7–10 times higher death and seizure rates than U.S. voluntary reports, suggesting significant underreporting.
They don't repel — they only kill after the parasite has already bitten and fed on medicated blood. The label states parasites 'need to start feeding to become exposed to the medication.' For a dog with flea-allergic dermatitis, that's a failure of the point of treatment, because a single bite triggers weeks of inflammation. And for ticks, disease transmission can occur before the tick dies.
There's no antidote. If your dog shows tremors, ataxia, seizures, or behavioral changes: (1) contact your vet or an emergency clinic immediately; (2) seek neurological evaluation; (3) begin supportive care; (4) report it to the FDA (1-888-FDA-VETS); (5) do not re-administer that product or its class. Screening high-risk breeds (see MDR1 testing) before the first dose is the best prevention.
